A new law wipes out standing AB requests every two years
There are city of Miami voters who are waiting for absentee or mail-in ballots in the special election this month to fill the vacancy in District 2. Only they won’t get it if they don’t ask.
Only a third of the typical number of ABs went out to D2 voters on Monday.
This is because of Gov. Ron DeSantis‘ voter suppression vís-a-vís a new law that purges the vote-by-mail requests after every election cycle. Previously, voters only had to request ABs every two election cycles.
According to Miami Dade Deputy Supervisor of Elections Suzy Trutie, 5,455 absentee or vote-by-mail ballots were sent to Miami District 2 voters Monday for the special election that ends Feb. 27. That’s far short of the 16,000 vote-by-mail requests that were previously on file in District 2.
Because those were among the 438,000 vote-by-mail ballot requests in Miami-Dade County that expired Jan. 1.

“Since this is a very convenient way for voters to cast their ballot, the Elections Department began a comprehensive outreach campaign to encourage voters to renew their request as soon as possible,” Trutie told Political Cortadito. “Many voters will have municipal elections this year and immediate renewal will ensure they receive their ballot for the upcoming election.”
The four largest cities in Miami-Dade — Miami, Hialeah, Miami Beach and Homestead — will have elections in November. “As a voter’s municipal election approaches, a letter will be mailed to the address on file, as well as a phone call, text and follow up email,” Trutie said.

That’s one of the things the election department is trying to do to restock the list of standing absentee ballot requests. Outreach began in December and will continue through 2024 “to educate voters about the expiration and encourage renewal,” Trutie said.
The department has updated information on its website and sent direct emails to more than 292,000 voters, she said, adding that they also advertise, post frequently on social media and work with municipal clerks and community groups.
“Through these efforts, as of today, more than 35,000 voters have renewed their vote-by-mail request,” Trutie said.

Yes that is true , not a stereotype but that is their apathetic problem and I say this as someone who has voted straight Dem last 2 election but locally I could not care one bit about that empty letter and usually wind up voting against every incumbent as most are owned by developers .

All things being equal if I was running for office and I had the choice of 100 Republicans ages 18 to 30 supporting me or 1,000 Democrats same age I’ll go with the Republicans and probably win by 80 votes , lol.
I do agree with Sergio that this might hurt the Republican party with older voters as far as re-registering might be a problem for plenty and as many might simply get ticked off .

Regardless of party it will give the more informed and engaged voters an advantage at least in the VBM count. And more importantly it will make illegal ballot harvesting of VBM more difficult. So that targets campaigns like Joe Carollo’s
As a long time super voter, I find re-registering every cycle inconvenience, but if it makes Crazy Joe’s life even a little more difficult I’m all for it. .
I applaud the new law. Now the boleteros have to work hard to steal an election.

If you read my statement you would understand that I did not say that the law is voter suppression. What I said is that the law was written to JUSTIFY Trump’s lies about his “stolen election”, and the demagogues are writing these awful laws, making it difficult to vote, only to gain the good graces of the Mafia Boss.
Ironically, I repeat, those lemmings that do whatever Trump tells them to do may be disappointed, because the new process is cumbersome and confusing, and the law just makes it difficult to vote. Voting should be EASY, as people can vote stock proxies today.
You’re spreading lies/misinformation by saying the new law is voter suppression by Governor Desantis. You should be more responsible when you make such a statement by explaining to your readers how the new law suppresses votes in your opinion.
Not only do we need to request a mail ballot all over again, but the process itself is cumbersome and confusing for many voters.
This measure is nothing but an attempt to give credibility to Trump’s LIE that the 2020 election was stolen. To fuel his lies, our legislators have complicated fulfilling a civic responsibility unnecessarily, and it will undoubtedly result in voter suppression.
Voting is a citizen’s right, and the process should be as clean and easy as it is for me and millions of people to vote stock proxies on the internet. Make voting easier, not more complicated.
Ironically, the “new and improved” Republican Party may find that they will lose more elections now that they have written off a segment of the voting population.
I renewed mine . Everyone I know has .
You can do it online but I went in person to the place in Doral I vote and did it there
I was told it can also be done over the phone .
I prefer .absentee because this way look up the amendments , etc but I do not return it by mail , I drop it off in person and they ask for ID .
