Have a question for Miami-Dade Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava? Ask her over a cup of coffee and some waffles Monday when you’re sure to have her attention.

Levine Cava, who is on a full on mayoral campaign already, is having a Breakfast with Daniella at Flava’s restaurant in West Perrine, 17490 SW 104th Ave., starting at 8:30 a.m. The eatery is in Levine Cava’s District 8, but she’s also had these conversations in Miami Gardens, Miami Beach, and most recently in Miami Shores Sunday. There’s another breakfast in Overtown on Thursday.

So, these are not conversations about District 8.

“Let’s have a conversation and share our vision for the future of Miami-Dade,” says the invitation email from the South Dade Dems. “Together, we can create a more inclusive and innovative Miami-Dade that works for everyone.”

The commissioner is seen as a leading contender in the mayoral 2020 race, principally because she has the Democrats behind her in a county that is more Democrat than Republican in a year that Democrats should be fired up. Former Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas may have some Democrat voters, but not the party or the establishment. That is fully hers.

Levine Cava also has $1 million in contributions when you look at her campaign account ($325,500) and her political action committee, Our Democracy ($709,500) combined.

Penelas has $902K in Bold Vision but has not opened a campaign account.

Levine Cava’s big problem is that she is a gringa and there has long been that Hispanic ceiling — or the perceived Hispanic ceiling — for countywide office. The general thought is you can’t win countywide without a Hispanic surname. It’s the reason that Katy Sorenson didn’t run in 2010.

But that was then. Last year, a non-Hispanic woman named Eileen Higgins called herself la gringa and won a county commission seat with Little Havana and Miami Beach in it. Maybe a Sorenson or a Levine could win countywide today.

Still, it might make a good question for breakfast on Monday: Como esperas ganarte el voto de los Hispanos?
