Doral to consider condemning Trump, taking back city key

Doral Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz will sponsor a resolution next week condemning billionaire businessman, reality TV star trump2and presidential candidate Donald Trump for his “racist, derrogatory” remarks about Mexicans and immigrants in his campaign announcement speech.

Even though other electeds have expressed outrage at the incendiary comments and the county commission passed a similar resolution last month, this move in Doral could set off a war between the city and it’s No. 1 investor and developer.

Because a group of residents want the council to go further: They want Trump declared persona non grata and to be stripped of the key to the city that he got for his investments and improvements to the old Doral Spa and Resort property, now the Doral Trump National.

Yes, many of them are the same residents who felt Trump should never have gotten a key in the first place. They are mad at the line of palm trees he planted around his property, blocking them of the greenway views they bought their homes for and enjoyed for years.

It’s not the trees for Carlos Pereira, founder of the Venezuelan American Democratic Club and former “Fat Chance” candidate for State House District 105 (losing to Rep. Carlos Trujillo), who is leading a charge to take the key back from the billionaire. For him it was about the $2.5 million the city gave him to bring the Miss Universe contest, which he said was not the economic engine that it was promised to be.

“We never got the investment returned with unas pocas flacas walking around our restaurants,” Pereira said. “They want to sweep that under the rug and hacerce los locos on that. But it should be investigated.”

Furthermore, he told Ladra, the key was not given to Trump “for the promotion of hatred, the promotion of xenophobia.”

If the county condemned the candidate’s hateful language, he asks, how could Doral — with an estimated 80 percent Hispanic population, most of those immigrants — not take a stand?

Pereira wrote to Mayor Luigi Boria about it earlier this month:

“As a citizen in the city of Doral, just like you of Venezuelan origin and of the immigrant community and that has throughout history nurtured and enriched this nation and of course including the city of Doral, I am obliged to inform you that I received calls from several neighbors and request that you lead in taking decisive action with respect to the conduct that the Republican candidate Donald Trump has had in impacting our community.

Dear Mr. Mayor, I publicly propose to take this petition to you and to your City Council. We request that you, Mr. Mayor, take up this issue for discussion to the City Council, and declare the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump persona non grata in the city of Doral and to remove the keys of the city that you yourself presented to him. It is not acceptable to continue to hide the subject matter under the table. As we have previously witnessed, you have sometimes acted quite firm with City Council Members, employees of the City and legislators. That is why we also ask you to once again show your firmness regarding the immoral statements that Mr. Trump heaved at us. As you know, Mr. Trump never withdrew his words and never retracted his insults to the entire Hispanic community.”

“Mr. Mayor, we implore you that you remember that you are also an immigrant and Mr. Trump’s behavior are unacceptable and immoral insults.”

The city has not responded to Pereira’s request. He sent a follow up letter to the mayor and council members, accusing them of “intellectual cowardice” and
