And floats $1 billion bond referendum for housing projects

Jeanette Nuñez for Miami-Dade Mayor? Rebeca Sosa for Elections Supervisor? David Richardson or Carlos Lopez Cantera for tax collector?

Frank Artiles for county sheriff? Frank Artiles?!?

These are actual scenarios put forth by a digital text poll that went out to some county voters this week. It was a long survey, with questions that ran the gamut — from favorability to policy positions to grading many of the current mayor’s initiatives to 2024 ballot decisions, which will include three new offices: Election supervisor, tax collector and sheriff.

But the stars were the interesting contests.

Everyone knows that Commissioner Raquel Regalado wants to be county mayor and may run against La Alcaldesa Daniella Levine-Cava in 2024. But this poll also threw in Nuñez — who really has no place to land — and, believe it or not, Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago. As if.

That was already interesting but later on, the poll pit Sosa, a veteran county commissioner termed out last year, against Miami-Dade Elections Supervisor Christina White, Miami Beach Commissioner Richardson against the former LG, CLC, for tax collector and Artiles against Freddy Ramirez for sheriff.

Ladra thinks that last one was for comic relief. Because, really, who would think that “Thanks Frank” — who hired models and Hooters girls as interns and was arrested for running a sham candidate for Florida Senate after he was forced to resign for some public racist rant– would make a good chief of law enforcement? Only in Dade.

“In 2024, Miami-Dade residents will elect a new sheriff,” one question starts. “In thinking about potential candidates, which most closely aligns with your views?” The choices are (A), a Democrat “who commits to support law enforcement while also deploying reforms that continue to build trust between residents and the police department.” Or (B), a Republican candidate “who commits to fully fund, and increase funding for, the police department while also taking on WOKE agenda policies.”

Their caps, not mine.

Other questions gauge the voters’ opinion on transgender issues and sexual identity being taught in schools and “socialistic policies imposed by local governments.”

It also gauges the voters’ opinion on many of the initiatives La Alcaldesa Levine Cava has begun as well as her response to the Surfside building collapse. Are they very weak or very strong or somewhere in between.

It even has the audacity to ask if she is weak or strong on holding the Urban Development Boundary, to which the only answer is very weak.

Christian Ulvert, the mayor’s campaign consultant, had emergency surgery Thursday and could not be reached for comment. But it looks very much like it was hers because of the DLC slate: Richardson, White and Ramirez, who should get a fundraising boost from the people scared of Artiles.

It’s possible some labor groups have been polling and one of the questions ask the respondent’s opinion on labor organizations. So there’s that.

Others may think it was Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who is asked about his favorability. But he’s aiming for the White House, no? His ego is too big to start swinging lower. But that’s the only way the Lago inclusion makes sense. His BFF Suarez threw Lago’s name in on purpose to elevate him to “once potential county mayoral candidate Vince Lago.”

But the $1 billion bond, County Hall sources say, is something the administration has been talking about. Why would Baby X ask about that?

  1. I’m sorry Ladra, but WTF do you mean by DLC was weak on the UDB??? She freaking VETOED it and the Commission overrode her veto. It then went to the hands of various County and State agencies who can still kick it back. Even on Calusa, where the Commissioners had a veto proof majority and also said that by allowing expansion in Calusa, they could vote “no” in the UDB (looking at you, Regalado), DLC said that an environmental study would have to be done in order for the project to proceed to prove the endangered bird did not have a rookery. Well, those studies came back conclusively saying that the rookeries existed and that the developers were lying. Now they’re back at square one. Just because these things, on top of Metrorail/Metromover expansion are being done via a procedural manner and not in the flashy/anti-establishment way some people expected these things to be done, doesn’t mean she isn’t an effective Mayor. There’s a system we unfortunately have to work through until we vote in a better commission. Don’t let certain Miami social media personalities who say one thing while not doing a lick of civic activism or have an understanding of how County Politics works tell you otherwise. Meanwhile, Regalado has sold out her constituents through and through. Jeannette is definitely an interesting opponent but what will she run in? Will she turn this non-partisan race into a partisan one? Why are Republicans in Tallahassee gate-keeping her from running for Governor?

  2. ” They don’t want all the Hispanics over 65 that watch Regalado on TV every night and hear her show voting ”

Ethnic voting separatist describes a hell of a lot of Hispanic voters and any flunky with a Hispanic name goes to the top of the list , sad to flee corruption , etc only to recreate it .

Regalado is owned by Developers and same ole same ole .

Cava is weak but not owned by anyone which here is unheard of and nice .

  3. The SHERIFFS OFFICE will be the most important office in the county. La Alcaldesa and Regalado are fighting tooth and nail to keep Police and Corrections under them. Ladra please do an article about this so the people know all the behind the scenes things that’s going on to try to keep some control. The Sheriffs Association is even taking Miami Dade to court. There paying lawyers big bucks to try to keep power.

  4. Only 20% of the population of Miami-Dade County even know what the UDB is let alone cares. I am a county employee and every county employee even the unions will vote for Regalado. She is who we wanted for County Mayor in 2016, in 2020 and hopefully in 2024. If not we will wait until 2026. She is a problem solver and really understands government. Cava is a nice lady but she is a weak at best, incompetent at worst. For the fist time in decades the BCC runs the county while she goes to press events. IF Regalado wasn’t a threat why did they work so hard to make sure she isn’t the vice chair? Why did they include her in a county wide poll? Why did they place a mayor from her district on the same ticket to peel votes from her? Also why a text poll? They don’t want all the Hispanics over 65 that watch Regalado on TV every night and hear her show voting?

  5. Racquel Regalado is dead man walking. When she pushed to change zoning to allow a sleazy speculator to invade the Everglades she is now unelectable. 1) She is in the pocket of a sleazy speculator 2) She pushed to invade Everglades National Park 3) She insulted the local Commissioner Higgins.
