Mayor Jose “Pepe” Diaz gets his slate to run the city

Sweetwater on Tuesday was the opposite of Coral Gables because the mayor got all his candidates elected in the city elections.

Commissioners Isidro Ruiz and Reinaldo Rey won their races overwhelmingly with 68% and 65% of the vote, respectively. Mayor Jose “Pepe” Diaz — who served as mayor before 20 years as a county commissioner — and Commission Chairman Saul Diaz were automatically elected when they were unchallenged.

More than 13% of the city’s 9,601 registered voters cast ballots in the city election, according to the Miami-Dade Elections Department.

The results could give Mayor Diaz a majority on the commission to help him move his agenda forward — quite the opposite of Coral Gables, where Mayor Vince Lago campaigned hard for two candidates who lost.

Late Tuesday, Mayor Diaz congratulated the two incumbents “who won in a landslide.”
