After eight public meetings that were scantily attended — one person went to the Hialeah town hall — the public will have at least three opportunities to comment on the $9 billion 2019-2020 Miami-Dade budget before the commission votes on it next month.

The first look comes courtesy of Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, who has her own budget town hall meeting from  6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Alper JCC Miami, 11155 W 112 Ave. In addition to the commissioner, who is running for mayor next year, and her staff, there will be representatives from the county’s budget management, police, parks and housing and community development departments.

And while it is in District 8, everyone in the county is welcome. “This is really about countywide allocations,” said Levine Cava, who already had a “back to basics” budgeting telephone conference town hall in July to “help set our budget priorities.”

“I welcome citizen participation. This is a way to be more inclusive and more effective,” Levine Cava told Political Cortadito. “Every year there is something that, but for public input, would not be in the budget.”

Her first year there was an increase in the parks budget after the public identified that as a priority. The next year it was resiliency. “Last year, it was early voting sites,” Levine Cava said.

“Every year, that needle has moved because of the public.”

This year, she said there may be more allocated toward the U.S. Census data collection process. Might Ladra suggest transit? By which we mean trains.

There will also be two general countywide hearings for public comments before the entire commission at County Hall, 111 NW 1st Street. They start at 5:01 p.m. on Sept. 5 and Sept. 19.

  1. All these BIG money projects with all the pricey frills going on in Miami but the tree pruning for hurricane season wasn’t done .

    ONLY pocket lining projects .

Then again the the majority of voters REWARD bad behavior / crooks and even more are politically apathetic basura so the Mayors couldn’t care less about basic city quality of life maintenance .

Lining their pockets is all that concerns them .

If we would have been hit , plenty of tree limbs or tree’s since so top heavy would have come crashing down on power lines and roads .

This alone in a place with standards would be enough to vote them ALL OUT come next election but here it’s normal Banana Republic behavior .

  2. $9 Billion is $1 Billion too much! Private sector taxpayers are getting screwed paying excessive pay and benefits to too many public sector employees.

  3. Daniella,

Want my vote. You want to hear what is a budget priority. How about bringing down all of the tolls and speed lanes in Miami- Dade County. This measure alone is causing more congestion and more accidents. Furthermore, how about letting us know who do you intend to replace for which Department. Politicians come and go, but the Administrators stay. How about getting rid of those Administrators who are the puppets of the politicians.

    • You do know that the County doesnt own speed lanes or tolls, exccept the ones on Key Biscayne…..it that the one your refering to?
