Political cartoon: Esteban “Book-em” Bovo’s library plan
  • Sumo

Earlier this month, and in the face of a gaping hole in the county library budget, Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban “Stevie” Bovo proposed using county parks buildings to house libraries as well as police and fire stations.

Bovo says the merging of uses would actually increase public enjoyment of under-used parks. But critics are afraid that this will open the door on non-park uses, including commercial uses, of green spaces.

The proposal also could open up a bunch of other potential problems, as Political Cortadito’s volunteer cartoonist, Mike Burke, took pen to paper to illustrate — and give the commissioner a new nickname.

  1. Esteban Bovo is the epitome of Hiealeah ghetto politics with corruption, deception, and theft. You’re playing with the big boys now… Descarado!

    • You hit the nail on the head… When are we going to get decent, intelligent and professionals for commissioners? We have been cursed with half-wits!

  2. Ladra, do your homework. The proposal merely allows parks to identify suitable, underutilized recreation buildings for potential storefront library merger. Police and fire stations are not part of the proposal and never were. With the library budget crisis reaching its climax, I don’t know why you think ideas designed to eliminate the payment of millions in private storefront rent isn’t an idea that ought to be considered by the voters. Again, if you had done your homework you may have actually raised some salient arguments to the contrary. But hey…at least we got a cartoon out of it.

  3. ladra- thanx for publishing my cartoon. however, I
must remind you that I am not ANYBODY’S cartoonist, paid, volunteer or otherwise. mike

  4. While he is at it, Bovo could also use those buildings as depositories for fraudulently collected absentee ballots. We know he and his staff have plenty of training on the subject.

  5. Dan Paul is spinning in his grave.
Maybe Stevie B missed the memo. The mayor just renamed parks department to PROS:
    parks, recreation and OPEN spaces.

For decades The parks department’s been using Bond money specifically approved by the voters to save open spaces for future generations.

    Talk about shortsighted politicians.
